ABOUT DARWISH AND MARY

Darwish and Mary are a cello and guitar, all singing folk collaboration between Paula Darwish and Hazel Mary based in North Wales. Crafting songs inspired by the local history, folklore and forgotten stories of their much loved landscape, they have been performing together since 2025 and have embarked on an adventure to uncover local stories to retell in song.
They are working towards their first album release, which includes the soon-to-be-released song about the history and folklore of Conwy town, and a seafaring epic about the legendary Anglesey bonesetter, Evan Thomas.

PAULA DARWISH

Paula Darwish is a singer/songwriter who is more well known for her unique and captivating interpretations of Turkish and Kurdish folk songs. After starting her musical life as a protest singer, a chance trip to Turkey led to a change of direction. After studying Turkish at university in London and Istanbul, she founded the Country & Eastern band, which combined elements of Turkish and Kurdish folk with electric instruments and western grooves. She then performed for many years in a small folk ensemble combining traditional Anatolian instruments like the baglama with guitar. Now living in North Wales, she has become fascinated by the local history, language and music. She is a dysgwr Cymraeg.

HAZEL MARY

Hazel Mary is a multi instrumentalist, composer and songwriter. She has lived in North Wales for over 10 years and has integrated into the music community. She has performed her own composition at the Conwy Classical Music Festival and has been commission to write for the Piano Quintet this year.
Having recently studied music at University, she has a keen enthusiasm for community art initiatives, building Conwy Fringe to support and promote local grassroots arts and DIY creatives.
Her first love is composing and writing music, and in her songwriting she seeks to find new ways to let her inner-voice be heard.
